A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book lodging after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could bed down in the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, believing I could pass the night somewhere that was open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the next day, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared confused since a woman saw me loitering in the city and wondered whether I needed help. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she suggested I could crash on a spare mattress at her university residence at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the filled rolls she had from her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and safe to spend the night.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman letting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. In those days I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – but still very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not go to the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. It is my wish karma has returned her act of kindness abundantly. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
