"When are you speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated fans have openly petitioned for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international following.

However the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
