An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
