Greenlandic Women Achieve Judicial Triumph in Fight with the Danish State over Forced Contraceptive Coil Scandal.

Survivors of a historical program where numerous of Greenlandic women and girls reportedly were covertly implanted with contraceptive coils absent informed permission have claimed a win following their court battle against the Danish government.

It has been announced that they are now eligible for financial redress from a settlement package.

Government Settlement Finalized

The Danish parliament, along with the government, reached an agreement granting approximately four thousand five hundred Greenlandic women the right to seek 300,000 DKK (£35,000) per person.

The announcement follows a three-year battle by a group of women who initiated legal proceedings seeking damages over the trauma and distress they experienced, which they said was a violation of their personal rights.

Historical Background

The Danish state administered Greenland under colonial rule for decades and retained authority over its medical services until 1992.

Earlier this year, following a long period of failing to acknowledge these actions, the government made an official apology. The prime minister apologized for the “systemic discrimination” against Greenlandic females by the state medical apparatus.

“These actions caused significant impacts for the affected women who have experienced both bodily and mental trauma,” said a senior official.

Compensation Procedure Outlined

The health ministry clarified those subjected to contraception without their knowledge or consent between 1960 and 1991 would be able to apply for compensation starting next year. The law is set to be enacted by mid-year.

According to results from a impartial investigation into medical procedures during that time, an estimated four and a half thousand individuals are potentially entitled to the fund.

For eligibility, applicants will need to:

• Provide a “plausible account” detailing what happened.

A plaintiffs, who was fourteen at the time she was instructed to go to the hospital for no clear reason, said it as feeling an assault.

“Speaking out as speakers and interviewees has been effective,” she stated. “We started in 2022 resulting in a relatively short time we have secured an apology and financial acknowledgment.”

A different voice shared satisfaction, stating, “This is a positive outcome. As my mother put it: we won.” Although there is a view the compensation should have been greater, they expressed contentment regarding the acknowledgment of past events.

A Greenlandic official called the compensation being “long overdue”. Stating clearly, “It is not primarily financial. It concerns formal acknowledgment of the hurt and its very severe implications.”

A Danish cabinet member conceded these events represent a “dark chapter in our shared history”, noting that compensation “will not erase the pain for survivors” yet it “serves to acknowledge and apologise for what they endured.”
