In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
