New Year Partygoers Urged to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.
Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.
The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Alerts Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
