New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
