The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which works to preserve the UK's independent music venues.

Fender was given the award on 16 October as his new release the album was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

He has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting more than £100,000 on his live tour to support 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped locations that were confronting imminent closure due to issues caused by water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from shows in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Pulp are one example who gave their honor prize money to good causes

He is not the first artist to donate his honor funds to worthy causes.

Back when the band won the prize in the mid-90s for their record their work, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would contribute their cash to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her bounty across several organizations, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," she shared with the media.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the youth organization that developed their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners M People contributed their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," said singer the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success affected another person's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had protected two small stages in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
