The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
