The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
