In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
