The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
