This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
