The Alan Turing Institute will carry out a scientific research initiative specifically developed to defend the nation from hostile threats, according to a latest statement.

This new direction follows significant changes at the government-backed institute, including the resignation of its former chief executive last month after both staff concerns and government pressure for comprehensive reform.

Increasing Digital Threats

The new mission comes amid growing concern about the nation's susceptibility to online disruptions and cyber-attacks.

Recent events have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a significant disruption affecting international online platforms and fresh digital assaults that disrupted production at key facilities and logistics systems across several organizations.

Guidance and Direction

A previous senior officer of the UK's air and space warfare centre will report back next month on how the state-backed organization can best support the scale of government AI ambitions in defense, national security and intelligence.

Organizational Refocusing

The institute's chair, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that nearly eighty separate studies at the organization with 440 employees have been closed, spun out or completed because they fail to match with the new direction.

Organizational Difficulties

The center has faced internal strife since last year as employees objected against reforms, culminating in a group of employees filing a whistleblower complaint to the appropriate oversight organization.

The center's administration stated that these whistleblower claims were third-party reviewed by a neutral third party that found them to have no substance.
