Hong Kong's LegCo functions as a regional legislature with the mandate to pass and change statutes for the region. Yet, electoral processes for this body have witnessed a significant decline in substantive competing voices during a period of major political changes in the last decade.
Subsequent to the return to Chinese administration, a model of a dual-system arrangement was promised, vowing that Hong Kong would retain a measure of autonomy. Gradually, observers note that these freedoms have been steadily diminished.
Significant Milestones and Reforms
During 2014, legislation was put forward that would have allow residents to choose the city's leader. Notably, the selection was restricted to contenders sanctioned by the mainland government.
The year 2019 was marked by widespread demonstrations, including an incident where residents accessed the government building to express anger against a proposed extradition bill.
The Consequence of the National Security Law
Passed in mid-2020, the security legislation handed extensive authority to Beijing over Hong Kong's governance. Conduct such as secession were criminalized. Following this law, the primary opposition organization dissolved.
The Present Election Framework
LegCo elections are regarded as Hong Kong's primary democratic event. But, laws established in the past few years now guarantee that only candidates deemed "patriots" are permitted to run for office.
